Delhi Guy Claims His Salary Was Deducted After He Got Stuck In Office Elevator For 3 Hrs

Inside busy offices and the corporate corridors of India lurks a dark thread that weaves its way into the fabric of workplaces, and that is toxic work culture. Enthusiastic employees frequently encounter hostile situations that break their self-confidence and the desire to contribute to their organization. They find themselves in an environment of stress, anxiety and dissatisfaction. Often at the centre of this toxic work culture stand difficult-to-deal-with HRs and managers.

Here is an example. A user took to Reddit’s r/india subreddit to share a shocking incident. The user is from Delhi and he got stuck inside an elevator in his office building for 3 hours. When he punched in at his office, HR informed him that he would be marked absent for arriving late and even his salary would be deducted.

However, when the guy said that since they are marking him absent, he would rather go back home. But then the HR insisted that he stay in the office to work, despite being marked absent. When he denied it, HR allegedly threatened him about his appraisal and questioned his work ethic and lack of motivation to work.

“My office is on 7th floor and we need elevator to go up and down and from past few weeks there are some problems with elevator. It stops randomly and doors won’t open, we already notified the concerned department and they were neglecting the service and maintenance of the lift. So yesterday I was in the elevator and it stops working out of the blue and electricity also goes off. I was not able to contact maintenance department or my office, I tried to reach them on call and after several attempts I was able to inform the HR about my situation and they send maintenance guy. After 3 hours they got me out of the elevator. When I was punching my In time the HR said you were late so you will be marked as absent and your salary will also deduct, I told them if you are marking me absent so I will take leave and go home, but my AM told me you have to work as they were short on staff, so I told them it’s not my fault if you allows me to punch In and correct the In time I will work or otherwise I am taking day off and they started to threatening me about appraisal and my work ethic how I was making excuses and do not put efforts and lacks motivation. So I recorded the elevator accident and documented the conversation between HR, AM and Me word to word and thinking I should send grievance report to higher level (sic),” he wrote on Reddit.
