Trans-Woman Pens How Her Grandma Dealt With Her Transition, Learnt To Be Proud Of Her Victories

Some of us have a really special bond with our grandparents. Even though most of us don’t meet them every day, they often remind us of the innocent childhood we had and how they would spoil us with little treats.

But it really hurts when the bond fades and there’s a strange uncomfortable feeling between us. When we can’t make eye contact with them and they’re no more proud of us.

It was also difficult for this doctor and artist Trinetra to explain to her grandmother about her transition. To explain to her that her grandson is now her granddaughter.

Taking to Instagram, the trans-woman penned a heartfelt note sharing how she felt strange when her granny refused to accept that she was transitioning from being her grandson to her granddaughter.

During her growing up years, Trinetra and her granny would spend time together and she would proudly show off her first grandson’s achievements. They definitely shared a special bond.

But, the doctor felt strange when her Avva wasn’t ready to come to her TEDx talk where she’d speak about her transition.

“It was a strange feeling when she wasn’t ready to come to my TEDx talk where I’d speak about my transition a few years ago, to know that her pride had ebbed away a little since finding out I was now her first granddaughter.”

But over the years, Trinetra has achieved much more and is today comfortable and proud of her identity. Her grandma too gradually learnt to love her the way she is.

Today, when she found out that her Avva keeps a copy of the Forbes magazine that has her face on its cover on her coffee table, it makes Trinetra feel that her granny is still proud of her.

“Time has weakened her knees and she walks with a hunch now, but she keeps a copy of Forbes on her coffee table with my face on its cover. She tells me about her heart medication, and says my happiness is all that matters. I wonder if she shows me off still, but I’d like to think she’s proud,” Trinetra wrote.

On reading this, people online dropped to the comments section to testify that like them, even her granny is proud of the person she has become.

The smile on both their faces shows that both, her granny and Trinetra herself, are proud of her. We are too!
