2 Men Get The Same Account Number By Bank Folly; One Deposits ₹1 Lakh & Other Withdraws It

It’s pouring money in India quite literally. While the cash rains in Kolkata are still fresh in our minds, here comes another curious case of money flowing in for an individual from Madhya Pradesh.

A State Bank of India (SBI) customer, Hukum Singh, has been finding large sums of money magically appearing in his account every month. He simply assumed that PM Modi was depositing the money in his account, reports The Hindu.

According to NDTV, Rajesh Sonkar, the manager of the SBI branch in Alampur, assigned identical account numbers to two different customers. The passbooks of Hukum Singh (from Rurai village) and Hukum Singh (from Rony village) were a near-exact match to each other – except for their photographs.

After opening his account, Hukum Singh from Rurai village left for Haryana to find a job. He soon began depositing his savings in the Alampur SBI. Things took a tragic turn when Hukum Singh who stayed behind in Madhya Pradesh found money appearing in his account every month.

Undoubtedly happy, and believing it to be the work of PM Modi, he withdrew the other Hukum’s savings every month – a total of Rs. 89,000 over six months.

“Money came and I thought Modiji was giving money so I withdrew it. I didn’t have money and it was a necessity,” he said.

The goof-up was discovered last month after Hukum Singh tried to withdraw his hard-earned money from the account. To his horror, he found the account had only Rs. 35,400 in it; there should have been Rs. 1,40,000. He immediately complained to bank officials.

SBI Alampur branch officials have acknowledged the error. However, it is still unclear how this situation will be sorted out.

Seems like all the memes about SBI bank may be true after all?
