Ranveer Singh has been constantly grabbing headlines after pictures of him posing nude for Paper Magazine took the internet by storm. However, the reactions to his pictures have been on either side of two extremes. He was either lauded for his bold move or was trolled and shamed. So much so, that a Mumbai-based NGO and a female lawyer filed police complaints against the actor for allegedly “insulting a woman’s modesty” and “hurting the sentiments of women”.

And now, the police have filed an FIR against the actor under IPC Sections 292 (Sale, etc of obscene books, etc) 293, 509 and sections of the IT Act.

However, several people were quick to point out the hypocrisy of this situation. We talk about a woman showing off her body and holding the male gaze accountable for any harassment or crime she faces but what about this case? If it were a woman and her body was accused of “hurting the sentiments of men”, wouldn’t there be a hue and cry?

Why there's no FIR against women who expose their body for few likes and attention on instagram?

Sharing his opinion on this issue, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma raised an important question.

Hindustan Times quoted him saying:
“(I) think it’s his way of demanding justice for gender equality. If women can show off their sexy bodies why can’t men? It’s hypocritical that men are judged by a different standard. Men should have as many equal rights as women.”
He also took to Instagram to share a note.
“I personally applaud and I am also thrilled to see the majority applauding @ranveersingh new age boldness💪💪💪 ..and I hope that the same majority will applaud a woman as much if she does the same ..There has to be a GENDER EQUALITY.”
