Reports of increasing sexual crimes against women have always left us in horror. It is even more shameful when women from girls’ hostels and PGs, which are supposed to be safe havens for women, have to face sexual abuse. For instance, a man was caught on camera masturbating outside a girls’ hostel in Assam or when girls in a UP school were molested by the hostel warden.
Another horrifying case has come into the forefront where a man in Indore was arrested for entering girls’ hostels and PGs at night to tear the residents’ undergarments and other clothes kept inside their almirahs, reports Times Now.
The 26-year old accused named Shrikant was on the run, as he reportedly, always managed to flee and escape even as the girls woke up. As per the Vijay Nagar police in Indore, the man had been accused of similar crimes of theft and harassment in the previous year as well.
Following multiple complaints from the girls, the police coordinated with the Nagar Suraksha Samiti and deployed security guards on different beats to tighten security. Tehzib Qazi, who is the police station in-charge said, “Vulnerable areas, hostels, and rooms where girls live alone were identified. Different persons were asked to keep a close watch and take a stroll in these localities every night in search of the intruder.”
On July 24, a vigilant local finally spotted the pervert in question and swiftly informed the police, reports TOI. “He had already entered a house. Four policemen sped to the spot on motorcycles and arrested the accused, identified as Shrikant,” Qazi added.
The offender was booked and the police revealed that he earlier worked as a security guard. He targeted girls who lived alone in hostels or rented rooms and confessed to visiting establishments in Vijay Nagar, Suman Nagar, Sheetal Nagar, and Swarna Bagh Colony.
Shameful cases like these are a prime example of why women’s safety and security still remains a pipe dream in our country. What are your thoughts on this?
