I was introduced to the soulful voice of Indian playback singer Lata Mangeshkar way before I could even pronounce her surname. At home, we would listen to her on the radio and then on TV because Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi, Kishor Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik among others were the artists who would take over people of all ages with their voices.
The artist who has been bestowed with several celebrated Indian and foreign awards for her line of work has a massive fan following across the globe. However, there are also some who don’t enjoy Lata Mangeshkar’s music too much and think she is ‘overrated’.
And one among them recently took to Twitter and wrote:
The Twitter user named Kaveri went on to say that “she went on singing way beyond her shelf life” and is “overused and damaged” in her thread.
Overused and damaged.
— Kaveri 🇮🇳 (@ikaveri) January 14, 2021
She added:
I'm glad she didn't sing for Umrao Jaan.
Till Pakeezah she wasn't that bad for me so I don't mind too much.
I'm fond of the OST of both these movies.— Kaveri 🇮🇳 (@ikaveri) January 14, 2021
People smelled hatred in her tweet and quickly jumped to the defense of the veteran singer. And among them was singer Adnan Sami.
Retweeting her tweet, he wrote:
'Bandar Kya Jaane Adrak Ka Swaad'.
…It’s better to stay silent and appear stupid than to open your mouth & remove all doubt!! https://t.co/kUi9dsfMGt— Adnan Sami (@AdnanSamiLive) January 14, 2021
Sami also shared a picture of Lata Mangeshkar and her sister Asha Bhosle with Pakistani singer Noor Jehan.
And soon, ‘Lata Mangeshkar’ started trending online with several eminent personalities and people alike sharing their two cents on the matter. Take a look:
I pray to God that in next life Lata Mangeshkar haters are born as humans like us who can understand beauty and understand what is truly divine.

One of the reasons I believe in Saraswati and divine is because of Lata Mangeshkar.
One of the reasons I believe in devil is because of her haters.

Please stop complaining about Lata Mangeshkar. If ever there was a human voice that was so perfect that it actually could be a musical instrument, that was Lata Mangeshkar. She was a perfect instrument + emotion.

I told my mom that Twitter is saying "Lata Mangeshkar is overrated." Her reply: "Jo log Neha Kakkar ko accha bolte hain, unse aur umeed hi kya hai." 😂
Mom being savage and absolutely real. #LataMangeshkar

Million times you will ask, my answer would be the same 👍 Lata Mangeshkar ji’s voice is divine
— UMA ARYA (@UMANUJ) January 15, 2021
Exactly, like Mukesh’s voice for Raj Kapoor, Mohd Rafi’s voice for Dharmendra. What I am saying is that Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was a perfect match for every single actress. You can’t pinpoint one.
— Gentle Giant (@iKunaal) January 15, 2021
A symbol of humility , grace and divinity is Lata Mangeshkar ji. Lata Didi rules the heart of millions and will continue to.

What is wrong with today's generation? Criticizing Lata Mangeshkar ji's voice? She is 90 plus for God's sake. It seems some people are just after our roots and somehow wants to destabilize them. Not thinking that when you destabilize the roots, you don't stand straight for long.

Everyone got triggered by one woman's opinion about Lata Mangeshkar. Kya yaar 😂

Well, it’s normal for different people to feel differently about a particular thing. Also, if I may say so, I still get goosebumps on listening to ‘Luka Chuppi’ from ‘Rang De Basanti’ and ‘Tere Bina Zindagi Se’ from ‘Aandhi (1975)’.
Earlier, when NY Times called Lata Mangeshkar a ‘so-called playback singer’, Twitter lost its shit. What are your opinions on this matter? Share with us.
