UP Groom Tied To A Tree After He Demands Dowry From The Bride’s Family

Despite dowry being illegal in the country and culprits facing the consequences of going against the law every other day, people from urban and rural sections of the country continue to engage in this illegal practice. Recently, a newly wedded woman walked out on her marriage after her in-laws demanded a bike as dowry in Odisha.

Similarly, in a case that was reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh district, a groom was tied to a tree after he allegedly demanded dowry from the bride’s side. The incident occurred on June 14, reported India Today.

During the ‘Jai Mala’ ceremony, a verbal spat broke out between the two families. The groom’s friends also misbehaved with the bride’s family, which fueled the situation further. It was then that the groom’s side demanded dowry from the bride’s side.

The groom was then held captive and tied to a tree for several hours after both sides failed to come to an agreement despite negotiating for a long time. Police officers from the Mandhata police station arrived, freed the groom and took him under custody. A meeting was arranged for both the families to talk and settle the matter.
