What comes to your mind when you hear Donald Trump’s name?
I asked this around my office and believe me, a lot of colourful adjectives came up. But none of them was ‘peace’. But, something ironic happened on Tuesday.
Donald Trump has made it on to a list of nominees for Nobel Peace Prize along with people like Pope Francis and a campaigner for Isis rape survivors.
After making a lot of inflammatory and divisive comments in the run-up to the caucus, this nomination does seem shocking. For starters, he talked about banning Muslims from entering the US and made harsh comments about Mexican migrants ( and about building a “big beautiful wall” between the US and Mexico.)
Reuters also reported that whistleblower Edward Snowden has also been tipped for an award with Colombian peace negotiators, US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz and Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation.
Kristian Berg Harpviken, a Nobel-watcher and head of the Peace Research Institute in Oslo confirmed that.
Apparently, Trump has been nominated for “his vigorous peace through strength ideology, used as a threat weapon of deterrence against radical Islam, Isis, nuclear Iran and Communist China”.
Although he doesn’t have a chance of winning. (Phew)
Did you know?
Thousands of people are eligible to submit nominations for the Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel committee typically receives more than 200 nominations, according to the Associated Press.
Well, this nomination has left me baffled. What about you?
