When they say your wedding is the biggest day of your life, they probably mean that marriages are a sacred union that aren’t to be entered into in jest. Obtaining a divorce ordinarily means separation, followed by months of counselling and then court proceedings before you end your wedlock. So you can imagine the shock a wife feels when her ‘husband’ gives her a triple talaq. Well, it hasn’t been over a month since the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill AKA Anti-triple talaq was passed by the Rajya Sabha.
The bill that became an act after the Rajya Sabha gave its assent last month calls for a punishment of up to three years in jail if a husband tries to obtain a divorce from his wife by saying the Arabic word ‘Talaq’ three times.
Although triple talaq is now a criminal offence in India, several people are still being booked for violating this law time and again that too for weird reasons.
Earlier, a Noida woman was given triple talaq for asking her husband for money to buy vegetables. Soon after, a UP woman who refused to accept chewing gum offered by the husband was given the oral divorce. Although the husbands have been booked for violating the law, the plight doesn’t seem to end. Today’s news stands testament to the fact that things need to change.
According to reports, a man living in Chandausi in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh, divorced his wife because she delayed the process of cooking him a meal. Doesn’t this feel purely outrageous? After all, for many of us millennials cooking for ourselves seems like a mighty task. Considering the wife was willing to cook for her husband, you’d think the man would be grateful. Apparently not. The unappreciative bloke demands a divorce! Reports also indicate that the wife was brutally thrashed and assaulted by the husband who has absconded since.
Post which the woman filed a case against him in Chandausi Kotwali police station. The police are searching for him and the investigation is underway.
It is shocking to see how citizens in the country take the law of the land so lightly. Hope they soon understand the gravity of the situation and eradicate such regressive practices for the betterment of the society.
