UP Woman Refuses To Accept Chewing Gum Offered By Husband, He Gives Triple Talaq

The Supreme Court of India outlawed triple talaq or talaq-e-biddat under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, saying it is “unconstitutional”. Triple Talaq or instant talaq refers to a practice followed by some men in the Muslim community where they can divorce their wife by simply uttering “talaq” three times.

Giving triple talaq to a woman is breaching of law now. But even days after it has been outlawed, cases of triple talaq refuse to cease. A couple of weeks back, a 60-year-old husband was booked for giving triple talaq to his 26-year-old wife in Rajasthan.

A similar incident recently came to light in Uttar Pradesh when 30-year-old Simmi from Amrai village visited Lucknow civil court along with her husband Rashid. According to News 18, Indira Nagar police station SHO S B Pandey informed that the woman had visited the court for hearing of her case of dowry harassment that she had filed earlier against her in-laws.

Simmi was talking to her advocate in the court premises when her husband offered her chewing gum. But Simmi refused to accept it so, in a fit of rage, Rashid gave triple talaq to her, Tej Prakash Singh, additional inspector told TOI. A complaint has also been registered against Rashid.

This isn’t the first time that a husband has given triple talaq to his wife over the silliest thing. Recently, a man allegedly thrashed and gave his wife triple talaq after she asked a mere Rs. 30 to buy vegetables in Noida.

It’s high time people begin to take the Supreme court’s decision of banning the age-old custom of triple talaq seriously. Breaching of law would only land the offenders in prison. Moreover, women in our society deserve respect and security.
