Swara Bhasker recently riled up a long-withstanding debate when she penned an open letter to Sanjay Leela Bhansali for ‘glorifying Jauhar’ in his period film, ‘Padmaavat’ that starred Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor.

In a long piece written for The Wire, Swara argued that the director’s treatment to the subject was heavily flawed.

That’s not all. The actress in her penned perspective, confessed that she ‘felt reduced to vagina only‘ during the climax of the film where innumerable Rajput women jump into flames to escape the monstrous Khilji. But apart from aesthetics, Swara had a problem with the way the sacrifice was shot and depicted.

But while her critique resonated with a bunch of viewers who were disappointed that Bhansali did not add any social commentary on the evil practice, there were people who trolled and slammed Swara for her opinion on the movie.

We told you how singer-actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi slammed her, didn’t we?

Yes, Swara did have a comeback for her…

But nothing takes away from the fact that the ‘Veere Di Wedding’ actress was subjected to a lot of name-calling. In fact, she is being shamed for being a ‘fake feminist’ as we speak.

If you haven’t seen it already, director Vivek Agnihotri attacked Swara on Twitter in a series of tweets.

He started with…

The irony is lost!

He even reached on a verdict.

But it is Swara we are talking about…

That’s right, she hit back. And this is how.

Apart from the virtual world of Twitter, Swara has even come out in the open and addressed the elephant in the room.

According to Indian Express, Swara clarified that she had no propaganda behind the letter. Instead, all she wanted was to have a healthy debate on a topic that has become a part of national conversation.

“I didn’t have any bad intention or malice in my heart. I just had questions in my mind and I think they are quite valid. So, I asked them.

If people don’t agree with me, it’s totally fine. It’s a democracy, so, it’s good if people think there can be a difference of opinion. Debates and discussion should happen. This is the purpose of art.”

She even spoke about the writer duo Siddharth-Garima, who defended Bhansali and thrashed her with a counter letter (addressed to all the offended vaginas) and said that even if she didn’t agree with them, they are entitled to their opinion.

I don’t mean to fuel the fire, but whose side are you on? I hope the right one.
