Odisha Student Missing Since Principal Allegedly Cut His Hair For Talking To A Girl In Class

Do you’ll remember your school days? Those care-free times when you did lots of mischief to trouble your teachers. Well, I don’t know about you but I was called to the principal’s office several times due to my (innocent) trouble-making skills. While schools these days are very supportive of their students, they also focus on maintaining strict discipline.

Recently, a student of a private school in southern Odisha district of Koraput has gone missing after being allegedly humiliated by the principal. The boy, a ninth standard student, was punished by the school’s principal for frequently talking to a girl student, reports The New Indian Express.

The principal had initially called the boy’s parents to inform them about their son’s behavior. However, later he reportedly cut the boy’s hair in front of other students along with the help of two teachers.

In a complaint lodged at Sunabeda police station, the boy’s aunt mentioned how his parents had to tonsure the boy’s head as his hair was cut haphazardly. She also alleged that the forceful chopping had amounted to humiliation for the boy. The boy has reportedly fled his home due to this torture.

Odisha school and mass education minister Sameer Dash was quoted saying by Hindustan Times that the student’s statement is crucial and “Stringent action will be taken as per law.” However, the school’s principal has completely denied the charges and said the case is fabricated.

The Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has now asked for a complete report from Koraput district collector, Superintendent of Police, district education officer, and Child Welfare Committee.

While punishment is a part and parcel of school life, such harsh actions shouldn’t be taken against students. What do you think about the entire incident? Let us know in the comments below.
