The #MeToo movement in Bollywood has been a journey of ups and downs. The revelations of actors Aditi Rao Hydari and Dia Mirza have left us shocked and disheartened that sexism is entrenched deep within the industry. Then again, a few people like Shah Rukh Khan have also brought a glimmer of hope with their respectful take on the matter.
There has been some progress with people in powerful positions facing consequences for their wrongful actions. But after one step forward, we’ve taken two steps back it seems.
Actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha made some discriminatory statements about the #MeToo movement, speaking at author Dhruv Somani’s book launch for ‘A Touch of Evil’.
According to The Indian Express, he was quoted saying, “Today is the time of #MeToo, and there shouldn’t be any shame or hesitation to say that behind a successful man’s fall is a woman. Behind the troubles and infamy of successful men, there have been mostly women that I have seen in this movement.”
“I really call myself fortunate that in today’s times, despite everything that I have done, my name hasn’t come out in the #MeToo movement.”
When a reporter called him out for his controversial remarks, he asked for them to be taken in the right spirit, “Don’t take it otherwise. Please take it with plain sense of humour. I highly appreciate, applaud the women who, better late than never, have come forward. I salute their courage and guts.”
Needless to say, his sexist remarks did not go over well and were slammed by the Twitterati
Shatrughan Sinha: ''I've been fortunate that DESPITE doing all that I did, my name hasn’t popped up in the #MeToo.'' Will someone please tell him to STOP making ''the #MeToo'' sound like a pop-up ad on his phone that he was dreading given his incriminating search history? UGH.

#MrShatrughanSingha I beg to differ. In the Era of #MeToo Behind successful man's fall is his actions, wrongdoings, abuse. Don't put blame on #Woman for his wrongdoing. It's high time we put blame where the fault lies. Blame the fall on his mindsets, values, narcissistic behavior

A sad state of affairs indeed. Hopefully, he will see the error of his ways (or thinking) in the near future.
