Pulwama Martyr’s Wife Being Pressurised To Marry Her Brother-in-law For Compensation Money

Ever since the attack on the CRPF convoy on 14th February in Pulwama, a lot of events have taken place in quick succession. Terrorists have been killed, airstrikes have been carried out, planes have been shot down, and a wing commander was captured and is now on his way home. But these are happening at the frontlines of India. The repercussions of these actions that are being witnessed in our country are very different.

According to the Times of India, CRPF constable H Guru lost his life during the Pulwama suicide bombing. And now his wife Kalavati is being forced to marry Guru’s younger brother to access all the compensation money.

On Wednesday Kalavathi approached Mandya police in order to assist her in resolving the issue. The cops advised her to be patient. Apparently, contributions from the general public, compensation from the state government and the army is the cause of the family’s conflict. In addition to all that, Sumalatha, wife of late actor-politician M H Ambareesh, had also promised to give the family half an acre of land at Doddarasinakere, 3kms away from where Guru’s family stays.

Although the police have neither registered a case nor begun any investigations, they have told Guru’s family members that there will be consequences if they don’t resolve the issue. A senior police officer said,

“It’s a family dispute and a sensitive matter. If there is a violation of law, then the law will take its own course.”

In the meantime, Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy has said that steps will be taken to provide Guru’s wife, Kalavathi a government job. This announcement has been backed by Kumaraswamy’s son, Nikhil, who was present during the post-death rituals of Guru on Tuesday.

The jawans and constables who are protecting us with their lives deserve every inkling of our respect. And their sacrifice shouldn’t be trivialised for any reason whatsoever. Let’s hope that our government goes into the heart of this issue, finds out what’s troubling the families of our brave soldiers and solves it.
