Indians Discuss How People In Arranged Marriage Setups Should Undergo HIV-STD Tests

In arranged marriage setups in India, both families tend to look into every nitty-gritty detail of the bride and groom and yet, in many cases, fail to consider and look into the most important factor of them all – sexual health. Undergoing HIV-STD tests is crucial for couples to ensure a healthy and informed union. This precautionary measure not only promotes the well-being of both individuals but also safeguards against the potential transmission of sexually transmitted infections.

Since the topic of sex and sexually transmitted diseases is taboo in our society, people aren’t willing to have an open discussion about it. Even if some try to have a conversation about it, they are looked down upon and judged. Here’s an example.

A guy took to Reddit’s r/AskIndia subreddit to ask, “Am I an a**hole for asking my potential partner to do HIV-STD tests during our arranged marriage talk?”

“I am gonna do it too, no issues but as soon as I bring it up in an arranged marriage or even in the initial days of any relationship, the woman thinks I am calling her whore. Idk how to put it in a way where it doesn’t seem rude to the other person. This happened twice in the arranged marriage setting and she called me an asshole. I just don’t wanna catch wild diseases,” he went on to ask.

Several people online, some of whom were doctors, responded to the post by highlighting how undergoing STD-HIV tests is a very practical thing to do to ensure one’s health. There were also some who said that other medical tests of diseases that can be passed down to the next generation should also be considered.

Here’s a look at some of the responses to the post:

Prioritizing such medical tests is a responsible approach. It builds trust, transparency, and the overall longevity of the marital relationship. Don’t you think?
