I believe that the biggest achievement one can aspire for is to save a life. Whether it is saving someone emotionally, spiritually, physically or literally, there is no greater happiness than being someone’s saviour. Isn’t that why we consider doctors to be equal to God? Because of their ability to save lives.

Thanks to technology, organ transplant is now a reality. People born with defective organs, people who develop faulty organs or those who are suffering from ailments can now have a chance at life due to medical advancement.

A heart-warming and heart-breaking story came to light today when an 8-year-old young girl managed to save not one, but 6 lives.

The young Mumbai girl was admitted to Lilavati hospital on 27th February, for neurological complications. She was pronounced brain dead by the doctors shortly after she suffered a brain stroke.

Her parents were aware of organ donation procedures and decided to donate her heart, kidneys, liver and eyes. They ended up saving 6 lives by their simple act of kindness and the girl became the youngest organ donor of the city.

As per a report in Hindustan Times, Pramod Shinge, the coordinator for organ donation at the hospital said,

“As per regulations, we conducted the first confirmatory test in the morning and second one at 6.30pm, after which we counselled the family about the possibility of organ donation. The family was aware of the practice and agreed readily to donate her heart, kidneys, liver and eyes.”

A 16-year-old girl who had just given her Secondary School Certificate exam became the recipient of one of her kidneys. The doctors of Lilavati hospital said,

“She had appeared for her Hindi paper on Tuesday and as the donors organ matched her specifications, her father agreed for the surgery on the same day. Family members said that since paediatric transplants are a rarity, it’s better to opt for the transplant rather than letting her continue appearing for exams.”

Her other kidney was transplanted to a 5-year-old boy in Jaslok hospital. Her heart was transplanted to a 10-year-old suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy, in Fortis Hospital, Mulund. Her liver was used to give life to a 32-year-old man.

Her eyes have been procured and preserved by Lilavati hospital’s Roshni Eye Bank and they will be used for patients who have lost their sight.

Losing a loved one is probably the most painful thing, and losing your own child is the saddest and most difficult thing for parents. But hats off to the parents of this young 8-year-old who managed to act kindly and strongly even in such grieving circumstances.
