Odisha Couple Ditch Phere, Take Oaths On Indian Constitution & Host Blood Donation Camp

Big fat Indian weddings are gradually moving away from the limelight, as weddings with thoughtful themes are the new cool! Instead of glamorous weddings with 7-course meals and flamboyant decor; environment-friendly themes and ones with a social message make news.

Remember the green-wedding where the couple distributed saplings as a return gift to the guests? Also, the one where the bride’s family gave a book lover’s ‘quirky dowry’ with a collection of books?

In a similar case, 31-year-old Biplab Kumar, an employee of a pharmaceutical firm, married 23-year-old Aneeta, an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM), on Sunday in a unique way.

The couple from Odisha’s Ganjam district ditched the ‘agni ke saat phere’ and a lavish post-wedding feast and took vows of togetherness by taking an oath to follow India’s constitution. Apart from this, they also organized a blood donation camp at their wedding.

Most of the guests and relatives who attended the wedding took part in the blood donation camp, reports News 18.

“Our marriage was solemnized without matching of horoscopes or chanting of hymns,” the couple said.

The groom’s father, who is a retired government employee said that he wished to set an example for the society with his son’s wedding.

“I am a rationalist and I do not believe in traditional marriages where priests chant hymns,” he said.

Around 36 units of blood were collected on the occasion, the father told Business Standard. The Humanist and Rationalist Organisation (HRO) and the Association of Volunteer Blood Donors (AVBD) have also praised the couple for their efforts.

Now, that’s what we call an out-of-the-box idea for an inspired wedding!

Kudos to the couple!
