Bride’s Family Surprises Book-Loving Groom With 1000 Books Worth ₹1 Lakh After He Refuses Dowry!

There are three kinds of weddings in India:

  1. Where the groom and his family shamelessly open their mouth wide to gobble up ‘muh-mangi rakam’ for marrying their daughter.
  2. Where the groom’s family try their creative best ways to ask dowry from the bride’s family in disguise of a ‘wedding gift’
  3. And finally, the good people who say a straight ‘no’ to dowry in any form!

Suryakanta Barik from Sonarpur, West Bengal belongs to the Type 3 mentioned above. The 30-year-old school teacher told his would-be in-laws that he would not accept any kind of dowry from them. But as he arrived at the venue where he was all set to tie the knot with bride Priyanka Bej, a huge pile of books at a corner surprised him.

“I had made it clear that I would not accept any dowry. When I arrived for the wedding, I was pleasantly surprised to find a huge pile of books as a gift,” the groom told the Telegraph.

The bride’s family decided to surprise their son-in-law who is an ardent reader with around 1000 books which cost around one lakh rupees. Bride, Priyanka, who is herself a book lover expressed how happy she is to marry a man who is against the concept of dowry.

“My family knew that I don’t like the concept of marriages that involve giving or taking dowry. So I am very grateful to have a husband who understands that. My father also knew that I love to read. That’s why he gave us this gift,” she said.

They reportedly bought all the books from Kolkata’s college street and Udbodhan Karyalaya. It’s the publishing house of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. It includes some phenomenal pieces from world-famous writers like Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay.

We hope our country is blessed with more such grooms who help curb the evil system of dowry from the society.
