North Korea Is Confiscating Pet Dogs & Allegedly Selling Them To Restaurants As Meat

North Korean president Kim Jong Un has been known for carrying out bizarre orders during his oppressive regime in the secretive country, from banning sarcasm fearing people only agree with him “sarcastically” to firing his photographer for blocking the crowd’s view of him for just 3 seconds. But his latest announcement has dog lovers all over the world in a rage.

As per a report in Sky News, in a bid to tackle the national food shortage and dire economic condition in the wake of COVID-19, Kim Jong Un has ordered dog owners in the country to give up their pets for dog meat in restaurants and even state-run zoos.

The Evening Standard reports, “Authorities have identified households with pet dogs and are forcing them to give them up or forcefully confiscating them and putting them down.” The move is allegedly to appease the masses as the country has a traditional propensity for consuming dog meat.

The order has naturally resulted in a lot of resentment amongst the pet dog owners who are reportedly “cursing Kim Jong Un behind his back.” But unfortunately, their hands seem to be tied and there is little they can do now, the source continues.

These pet dog owners are thought to be owned by the elite and wealthy population of the capital city Pyongyang, and are often described as a symbol of capitalist “decadence” by the authorities,  as per the NY Post. “Ordinary people raise pigs and livestock on their porches, but high-ranking officials and the wealthy own pet dogs, which stoked some resentment,” the source adds.

Kim Jong Un had previously mentioned owning pets as “a tainted trend by bourgeois ideology” while carrying out its ban in July, as quoted by the English edition of the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo.
