14 Minor Characters In Movies That Made A Tremendous Difference

We have always been taught to never ignore and underestimate the small things in our lives – small people, small incidents, small tragedies, small happiness.

And similarly small roles in movies sometimes have a significance that surpasses even the lead characters. They sometimes hit you hard, or sometimes make you realize their importance much later after the curtains were drawn.

These are some of the most rememberable characters that etched their identities in film history forever.

1. Agent Coulson in Avengers

Perhaps the most likable character in all of the Avengers movie, people stared in disbelief as he was killed off. And it was a surprise because he was so resourceful, right from the time of Iron Man.

And he did blast Loki with the Alien gun SHEILD were working on.

“So that’s what that does.”

2. Quicksilver in X-Men

When Quicksilver entered, no one anticipated one of the most brilliant scenes in movie history. He stole the show like no other small character could. The encounter could have ended in Professor and Magneto getting injured – or worse – killed.

But not before Quicksilver had a Quick word with awesomeness.

“It’s cool, but it’s disgusting.”

3. Yondu in Guardians of The Galaxy

Just another blue guy who does all the screaming – until he killed 10 odd aliens at one go with his enchanted arrow. He also fights the bad when the good guys show their incapability.

He made us instant fans, even when he wanted to take away the infinity stone for himself.

“I may be as pretty as an angel…”

4. Kalia and Samba in Sholay

Samba will be immortal because of one dialogue.

And Kalia too. They almost made Gabbar what he was to us in one scene.

“Maine aapka namak khaaya hai sarkar.”

5. Jesus in The Big Lebowski

Purple tracksuit, pedophile and overconfident, Jesus steals the show in just one scene – with stars like The Dude and Walter in the same frame.

Too much swag.

You ready to be fucked, man?

6. Seraph from Matrix Reloaded

Neo couldn’t defeat him, and had to settle for a stalemate. He has defeated Agent Smith too. It is a pity they did not show a lot of him. He keeps The Oracle alive and takes Neo to the Oracle.

He should have a film of his own.

“I am Seraph. I can take you to her. But first, I must apologize.”

7. Kachra in Lagaan

A star spinner from the lower caste happily accepted into the team. It really made us happy – in the most sincere way possible.

The meek really make the difference.

8. Perpendicular in Gangs of Wasseypur

Who says that kids cannot be brutal? Perpendicular made such an impact in the whole dynamics of the workings of Wasseypur, you had no other option than to adore him for who he was.

“Hamla naam palpendiculal hai.”

9. The old man in Shawshank Redemption

He has one scene in which he makes us cry and realize what long term prison sentence does to a person. His kindness was shown earlier when he produces a bird from his pocket and feeds and keeps it alive in a place that holds murderers and rapists.

His death hits us hard, harder than anything in the brilliant movie.

“The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry.”

10. Juhi Chawla in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa

Just when we felt that nothing was going to turn out well for Sunil, Juhi Chawla makes an appearance that lifts hearts and hopes of everyone in the audience and of Sunil himself.

We didn’t give it much thought, but it is her who finally saves Sunil. And us too.

11. The Old man in Home Alone

Prejudices make us believe in stupid things. It makes us look at people differently, it makes us behave differently towards people, just because we hold prejudices. And that is exactly what Kevin MacCallister thought of the old man who shoveled snow.

Turns out, he saves him from the bad guys in the end and restores Kevin’s faith, destroying his bad habit of listening to bad gossip and holding prejudices in his head.

12. Neil Patrick Harris in Harold and Kumar

Neil Patrick Harris is always welcome in any movie there is. And he was very welcome in the movie too – which was getting a bit monotonous with the Harold and Kumar shenanigans.

13. Bill Murray in Zombieland

SMALL-1

His sudden appearance and presence are jovial that you do not even feel bad when he dies as abruptly as he appears. He shows the protagonists a good time that makes them bond with each other and strengthen whatever was existent.

Bill Murray is always a class apart.

14. Gogo Yubari in Kill Bill Vol. 1

No, she is not one of your regular school going girls. She kills with swords and spiked metal ball with a chain. Also, she is known to be a complete tyrant, more feared than anyone BB will face, even more than Bill himself.

It is the beauty of the script that makes even the smallest of the characters so visible in the main plotline.

As they say, it is the small things that matter.

In good cinema – small characters matter too.
