60% Married Indians Are Open To Extra-Marital Affairs, Sexual Relations Outside Of Marriage

In a country that places immense importance on loyalty and fidelity, it is shocking to see how normalized extra-marital relationships are in our society. In the past, a thread on X (formerly Twitter) went viral where people were sharing stories of extra-marital affairs amidst their own family members and neighbourhood.

However, as it turns out, 60% of married Indians are open to extra-marital affairs, open relationships and sexual relationships outside of marriage, reported India Today.

According to a study that was conducted by Gleeden, a social networking service, that focused on India’s changing attitudes towards marriage, infidelity, and cultural norms, 1,503 married Indians from Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities between the ages of 25 and 50 were assessed.

It was found that 60% of them were open to sexual relations outside of marriage, and 46% had a tendency to form platonic relationships or be inclined towards emotional infidelity.

36% of women and 35% of men found virtual flirting attractive. On the other hand, 33% of men and 35% of women openly admitted to having fantasies or dreams about other people who are not their partners.

“The survey offers a fascinating window into the intricate realm of contemporary Indian relationships. It questions accepted wisdom and calls on society to consider the changing nature of love, commitment, and the quest for personal fulfilment. It also reflects the country’s acceptance of individuality and personal autonomy. This viewpoint not only defies conventional wisdom and presents Indians as bold but also themes of love and self-expression,” said Sybil Shiddell, Gleeden’s country manager in India.
