Yes. Fined. For having biryani! (The apocalypse is near, Imma tell you).

Ok, let’s get serious.

Jawaharlal Nehru University has fined five students for Rs 6,000 to Rs 10,000 for “cooking food (biryani) in front of the Administrative Building”. The incident happened on June 27 and the verdict came out on November 8.

The order fined students under “any other act which may be considered by the Vice-Chancellor or any other competent authority to be an act of violation of discipline and conduct.”

It happened on the day the union representatives went to Vice Chancellor’s office seeking an appointment. Then JNUSU president Mohit Pandey told Hindustan Times,

“We were waiting inside since afternoon. Meanwhile, students waiting outside cooked food as no one knew when we would get the appointment. We got the appointment late in the night.”

Amir Malik, another student who was fined, said that they decided to cook food as all the dhabas in campus close at 11 p.m.

“The VC is targeting students who oppose him. There is no specific charge against us except that it says the V-C can consider any act to be in violation of rules. Since when is cooking indiscipline?”

According to Times Now, ABVP said that the students were having beef biryani.

Calling it a serious act, JNU has condemned it and asked the students to pay the fine within 10 days of the issue of the order, i.e by November 18.

An ex-JNUSU vice-president Satarupa Chakraborty was fined Rs 10,000 for, “having food (biryani) prepared by some students,” and for “leading the protest demonstration inside VC office”.

The controversy has become a murkier one.

Meanwhile, netizens have their own share of reactions.

Some questioned the nature of the news.

Some brought human rights into picture.

Well, kinda agree with this guy.

My reaction, precisely.

That’s quite a fact.

We are still to find out what the truth is. But seriously, biryani and fine? Baat hazm nahi hui. 🙁

BTW, Biryani cravings in 3…2…1
