Hungarians Offer Free Pizza To The Elderly & Flats For Self-Quarantine Amidst Pandemic

In such tense times where the coronavirus pandemic is accelerating at a massive rate, it is only fitting for us as a society to help those in need. We all know that to curb the spread of the virus, several governments across the world have imposed a complete lockdown on citizens. Hence, shopping for essentials has become problematic, especially for the elderly who are more susceptible to the virus.

To help such people, 20-year-old Milan Varga from Budapest is delivering free pizzas to the elderly who have to self-isolate in their homes, reports The New York Times.

Varga had recently opened a small pizzeria with his savings from the past 3 years. However, with the coronavirus, no customers have visited his pizzeria so far. With lots of ingredients stocked up, Varga decided to use them to feed the elderly who are unable to do so themselves.

“If I cannot sell pizzas at least I can help those in need by giving them free pizzas if they voluntarily put themselves into quarantine, and thus I am trying to look after them and make sure they stay at home,” he said.

Not just Varga, but several others have come forward to help the healthcare professionals who are working day in and day out to rescue those infected by the coronavirus.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, members of the Facebook group ‘Budapest Airbnb Community for the Health Workers’ are offering their flats to healthcare workers who want to isolate themselves to protect their families. 43 workers so far have moved into the vacant flats.

Gergely Toth, the manager of one of the hotels in Hungary’s main summer holiday destination, offered hotel rooms to Hungarians returning from abroad who had to go into the 2-week self-quarantine, reports India Today.

Not just people in Hungary, but the famous Glenary’s bakery in Darjeeling is offering free food to people. Recently, they took to Facebook to announce that the bakery will be open for everybody and their fresh batch of goods will be up for grabs for free till stocks last. In another post, they also announced that they will be distributing free bread to daily wage workers and charitable homes, reports The Indian Express.

People like these make the world a better place. During such dark times, we can all take little steps to help our community, like asking the elderly if they need groceries when going to buy/order essentials for ourselves!
