Finland’s PM Proposes 4-Day Work Week With 6 Hour Days To Give Workers Time With Family

Work smarter, not harder, right? Wouldn’t it be easier to get our jobs done more effectively if we had more days to rest and rejuvenate? Image having an off on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday! You could easily complete all your daily chores, go grocery shopping, rest and still have time for your family and friends without feeling all exhausted. It seems like a far-fetched dream, doesn’t it?

Well, the world’s youngest serving Prime Minister seems to agree with us. Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin has proposed a flexible working schedule in the country that would involve a four-day-week and six-hour working day so that employees can relax and spend more time with their families.

The mother-of-one was quoted saying by Daily Mail, “I believe people deserve to spend more time with their families, loved ones, hobbies and other aspects of life, such as culture. This could be the next step for us in working life.”

The proposal, that aims to improve employee productivity, was immediately appreciated by the minister of education Li Andersson, the leader of the Left Alliance.

Sanna also mentioned, ‘It is important to allow Finnish citizens to work less. It is not a question of governing with a feminine style but offering help and keeping promises to voters’.

Normally in Finland people work up to eight hours per day, five days per week. In their neighboring country Sweden, where the six-hour-day policy has been practiced since 2015, showed that employees were happier, wealthier and more productive.

In the past, Microsoft Japan and Portcullis Legals, a UK based company have also implemented the three-day weekend policy and found the results to be positive as employees showed increased productivity. Now, this seems like a great policy, doesn’t it boss? We’re ready when you are!
