Brave Delhi Auto Driver Sacrifices Own Life To Rescue Drowning Woman And Baby

Fictional heroes wear masks and capes. But out in the real world, they are common people just like you and me. They are delivery boys who save people from hospital fires and auto drivers who return cash that passengers accidentally left behind. Here is another incident that will restore your faith in humanity and make you believe in the inherent goodness of people.

No shortage of courageous men

According to the Times of India, Pawan Shah, a 30-year-old was an auto driver in Delhi. Last week he was on his way home after the day’s work when he chanced upon a fatal scene. A woman carrying her baby was standing on the edge of a bridge on Meethapur canal. She then jumped into the water. Without any hesitation, he dived off too in an attempt to save her. His calls for help alerted three passers-by Rajveer, Jamil and Sanjeev. Together, forming a human chain they managed to pull out the woman and her baby to safety. Sadly, by the time they returned to save Pawan, he had already been swept up by the strong currents.

Police officials have been conducting a search but so far the body has not been recovered. The mother and baby are in a stable condition after receiving proper medical attention. Investigations by the authorities suggest that the woman took this extreme step due to an altercation with her husband.

Help can come from the unlikeliest of places

In a city where auto drivers have a notorious reputation for being rude and overcharging passengers, this incident comes as a stereotype-buster. To ensure that his act of courage is not forgotten, the police will recommend his name for the ‘Jiwan Raksha’ bravery award.
