30,000 People Attend Mass Wedding In Korea Despite Coronavirus Scare

Coronavirus has been wreaking havoc in China lately. It has claimed several lives including those of children and adults. In a bid to control the spread of the deadly virus, various countries have banned the entry of Chinese people suspected to carry the infection.

Countries that share their border with China are taking special care to keep their citizens away from the virus. Amid such a crucial outbreak of the virus, China’s neighbor, South Korea hosted a mass wedding.

The mass Unification Church wedding was a huge hit with around 6000 couples in attendance, reports AlJazeera.

Around 30,000 people attended the wedding wearing face masks to avoid coronavirus infection. The church staff has confirmed that the years-old traditional event went well as it was the 100th anniversary of its leader’s birth, reports NY Daily.

The tradition of mass wedding kicked off in the 1960s’ with just a dozen of couples which gradually increased to thousands. In 1997, 30,000 couples took part in the mass wedding of Washington, followed by around 21,000 couples who tied the knot at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul.

Around 26 cases of coronavirus have been detected in the country. The church staff has however confirmed that they took the necessary precautions and prepared hand sanitizer, handed out surgical masks and checked couples’ temperature, to avoid any chance of coronavirus spread at the mass wedding.

Public gatherings, festivals, graduation ceremonies, and K-pop concerts have also been canceled in various parts of the country following the coronavirus outbreak.

“I am overwhelmed that I am getting married today,” Choi Ji-young, who met her husband matched by the church just two months ago said. “It would be a lie if I said I was not concerned at all about the infection. But I feel like I will be protected from the virus today,” she added.

Well, all’s well that ends well! And we wish a happy, healthy marriage to all the couples.
