China-Return Couple Attend Own Wedding Via Video Conference Due To Coronavirus Fears

The coronavirus has claimed the lives of more than 550 people in China as of today. 647 Indians along with 7 Maldivians have been evacuated from Wuhan via two Air India flights. The Health Ministry has issued a warning to all citizens asking them to cancel all non-essential trips to China and has provided with a list of precautionary measures we can take to avoid getting infected.

Among the many arrangements that continue to get affected because of the deadly virus is one China-return couple from Singapore who had to attend their own wedding via video conference because the guests feared they could be infected with the coronavirus, reports The Indian Express.

The couple had spent Chinese New Year in the Hunan province, of which Wuhan is the capital, and had only returned to Singapore a few days before the big day.

According to BBC, many guests said that they wouldn’t be coming to the wedding.

“We wanted to postpone the wedding but the hotel was not willing to. They said everything had been arranged and it was non-negotiable. So we felt like we had no choice but to proceed with the wedding,” said the couple.

So, they decided on an alternative. The couple suggested that they wouldn’t attend the wedding, but would dress in their wedding outfits, book a hotel room, and live-stream into their wedding. And so they did, even though their parents were reluctant at first and the guests were shocked.

Via the video conference, the couple raised a toast and interacted with the guests. However, only 110 out of 190 guests made it to the wedding.

“We were not sad but a bit disappointed. I think there was no other option so no regrets,” said the groom.

Our prayers are with the people whose lives continue to get affected by the coronavirus. I hope the world recovers from this epidemic.
