Books, fairytales and movies will have you believe that women crave and long for love. But there’s one thing that women tend to want more than love, and that is freedom. In our lifetimes, we will see innumerable women walking away from their homes, breaking their unhappy marriages, leaving their partners and their communities and running to a place where they will be the sole decision-makers of their own lives; where they can tread their own path.
Sahil Bloom, an entrepreneur, took to X to share the story of his mother Lakshmi who was born and raised in Bengaluru. When she was younger, she secretly applied to a college in the US and got a scholarship. She arrived in the US in the 1980s with no money. However, the managed to complete her undergrad degree in two years and her Master’s in another two.
Meanwhile, she met and fell in love with an American man and has been married to him for the past 42 years. They still are very much in love.
She built a business and raised two sons and now is a grandmother to two grandsons. She has, however, retained her energetic and mischievous spirit. Not just a life, she has built a legacy.

At that time having the courage to study abroad as a girl is truly commendable.
