Bengaluru Police ‘Recruits’ Indie Dogs, Trains Them To Guard Stations & Identify Criminals

It is a popular opinion that breeds like Labradors, German Shepards, and Dobermans make for great army and police dogs. However, recently we have been seeing this idea shifting. More people are now realising that our very own Indie dogs are an asset. With impressive protective instincts, the ability to adapt to any weather conditions, and very good sight and smell abilities, Indie dogs are no less.

Which is why Bengaluru Police has decided to “recruit” stray dogs and train them to be watch-dogs and accompany the police on night patrols, reports The New Indian Express.

This initiative has been specifically taken by the South Division of Bengaluru police which has 17 police stations. They have started to feed and take care of the stray dogs that loiter near the station. This is to bring them all in good shape before starting the training process.

“There are at least about 50-60 dogs in total who are mostly outside the police stations wandering around. Many residents come and feed them and take care of them. Now, we want to do our bit by doing the same,” said the Deputy Commissioner of Police.

At first, the dogs will be given the training to respond to basic commands like ‘sit’, ‘stand’, ‘jump’, etc. They will also undergo training on how to behave with the public when they visit the police stations. They are also being taught to identify miscreants.

“The police go on night patrols. They can take these dogs with them, which will drive in a sense of fear among miscreants,” the DC said.

2 veterinarians have been allotted to vaccinate the dogs and people from animal rescue groups often come to take care of the dogs. Kennels have been made for the dogs to sleep in.

Out of the bunch, some dogs will even be inducted into dog squads in the future.

“When the public sees that police are taking care of stray dogs, they too will come forward to adopt strays,” said Priya Chetty Rajagopal, an animal lover who was highly impressed by this initiative.

We are so proud of our Indie dogs. May they get recognised for their abilities all the more!
