‘Oh my god, you’re an only child, no wonder you have a fancy phone/car/clothes/life’. We’re tired of hearing this. Maybe there are benefits to being an only child and I’m not complaining about those, but there are certain things in life we miss out on completely. Being an only child isn’t all rainbows and roses, sometimes it’s plain lonely.
And most of us realize it when:
1. Our friends tell us all about their sibling squabbles over a nice top or a lipstick.
2. We have no-one to cover up for us when we sneak out
3. We don’t have anyone to share the burden of aunties saying ‘Shaadi kab karoge?’ at every wedding.
4. We don’t always have a standing lunch date.
5. We don’t have someone to entertain us through less than entertaining family vacations
6. Every year on open day we got the ‘do better’ lectures alone.
7. We don’t have someone who will take our side no matter what and fight our corner
8. We don’t have someone who’s already broken the curfews, dated ‘unacceptable people’ to make it easier for our parents to accept this way of life.
9. We don’t have that person who keeps our secrets because they have to not because you ask them to.
10. We don’t have that one person who is raised with the same values, has the same principles and believes in the same things, thus understands where we are coming from.
11. We don’t have a shoulder to lean on and share the same concerns during a family crisis.
12. No one to warn our significant others: ‘If you hurt my sister/brother, I’ll hurt you’.
13. No one who’ll give you a reality check when you really need it, without being scared of being unfriended.
14. We don’t know of a relationship that is so deep and unbreakable.
15. We don’t have the one person we can grow old with even if we lose all our teeth, decide to remain single and become cat ladies.
But then again, if you had a sibling, your friends wouldn’t have become your family.Â
