Viral Video Shows Police Officer Smashing Car Window To Free Bear Trapped Inside

If like me, you spent the better part of your life digging around the internet, one of two things can happen. One, nothing surprises you any more as you’ve accepted the fact that the world is a crazy place. Or two, overconfidence takes over and you start thinking you’ve seen it all and yet at the next click, you see something that drops your jaw. Like, for example, when you find out that bears can open car doors. No, seriously, they can.

Just ask Deputy Lade, a Placer County Sheriff’s deputy, who found himself on the other side of a car door, just yesterday.

A video posted by the Sheriff’s Department shows a bear trapped inside an SUV, near Lake Tahoe in California, as the deputy attempts to let it out.

Here’s what they have to say about the incident:

“The bear got into a Subaru Outback in Carnelian Bay and destroyed the interior so badly that the doors couldn’t be unlocked. It was decided the safest way to get the bear out of the car was to break the window. Deputy Lade was brave enough to break the window, allowing the bear to jump out and flee into the forest.”

The video shows the deputy breaking the window and quickly getting out of the way. Which turned out to be a good choice, as seconds later, the bear scrambles out through the window and flees the scene.

In case you were wondering, it appears bears getting into cars is pretty common. The comment section of this video is filled with people vouching for their experiences with the furry visitor and how every time, the interiors of the cars have been demolished. And you can’t blame the bears either. Imagine walking around free on all fours one second, and the next you find yourself trapped in a claustrophobic metal box. The ones who experienced such absolute demolition of their cars have a word of advice for everyone: “Don’t leave any food in your car, that’s why they get in.”

The more you know, right?
