‘The Terminator’ Train Started In Delhi This Friday With One Goal In Mind: Kill Mosquitoes

The mosquito has been a ruthless assassin, causing life threatening diseases like Malaria, Dengue and Chikungunya, and killing millions each year. To put an end to the mosquito’s incessant rampage, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation have come up with a radical idea.

A Machhar Maar Express was commissioned in Delhi this Friday, which sprayed insecticides along the tracks as it travelled, to curb mosquito breeding in NCR.

The train consists of an engine running at 20kmph with a low lying platform attached to it. Two trucks capable of spraying up to a range of 50-60 metres are mounted on these platforms to spray all possible mosquito breeding sites along the train’s path.

The train, named ‘The Terminator’, is slated to run twice a week covering most of the areas in South Delhi.

By the 15th of October, even the North and East areas of NCR will be covered by the train.

Civic officials were asked why this exercise was not done earlier this year when there was a dengue outbreak, and they had this to say.

“The train can be run only after the rains when water is stagnant. As large amounts of chemicals are involved, we can’t overuse them. It might be harmful.”

It is certainly a great initiative taken by Delhi and we sincerely hope other cities will soon adopt a similar practice.
