We all know how humans contribute a lot to polluting water bodies and over-flowing landfills and garbage dump yards. The reality check was witnessed when several water bodies including the holy Yamuna river turned clean and pristine at the time when humans were locked inside their homes, courtesy of the coronavirus lockdown.
People rejoiced when the water body, which was earlier spewing toxic foams formed due to the increased pollution level, became all clear. However, things didn’t remain the same for long.

Soon after the lockdown was lifted and economic activities kick-started, the Yamuna went back to its polluted condition. And even after months, the situation hasn’t improved. In fact, it’s getting worse with every passing day.
Recently, pictures of the Yamuna River near Delhi’s ITO covered in toxic foam again made it to the internet. According to NDTV, it’s happening due to the discharge of untreated sewage into it. Looking at the pictures one might think that they’re some huge waves or clouds, but sadly, it’s hazardous waste that doesn’t end till as far as an eye can see.
The riverbank can also be seen dumped with garbage and filth.
This is how people reacted to the appalling pictures:

There is urgent need of upgrading the sewerage system all over the country this is so important that if it is ignored the we have to spend many times more in addition to uncountable casualties. Apart from this the other remedial measures must be initiated simultaneously.

We Indians can only “worship” the river by symbolic means, even if that means choking it to death.

The Delhi Jal Board claimed that “untreated sewage entering the river from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh has on multiple occasions led to an increase in ammonia levels in the river water, affecting drinking water supply in the national capital.”
It’s time we also come forward and do our bit to save the water body. Don’t you think?
