Desis Argue Why Women Are Expected To Prioritize Husband & In-Laws But Men Are Not

In many Indian households, women are expected to leave behind their families upon marriage and prioritize their duties towards their in-laws, often at the expense of their own desires and aspirations. This expectation places a significant burden on women to seamlessly integrate into their husband’s family structure, often sacrificing their autonomy and personal ambitions. On the other hand, men generally resist prioritizing their wives over their own families, opting to maintain the status quo of living with their parents rather than moving into a separate house. Why is that?

People online on Reddit’s r/AskReddit subreddit have been talking about this after a user asked, “Why women are expected to prioritise their husband and his family (also leave their house) but men refuse to prioritise their wife or move to a different house?”

Responding to the post, several people suggested that both the husband and the wife should move into a house of their own or a rented apartment and start their own family separately. They also highlighted that this is something that should be discussed before marriage. However, there are many who would like to take care of their ageing parents or do not have the financial condition to move to a separate place. These things should also be cleared before marriage so that both the husband and the wife can find a middle ground.
