Messaging app WhatsApp has officially rolled out the WhatsApp Pay option for 20 million Indian users which works with Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Essentially, this feature allows us to send or request digital payments through the chat window provided we have the latest version of the app and are using the same mobile number as registered with our bank account.
News18 reports that all we have to do is complete the UPI verification to link our bank account to WhatsApp Pay and KYC (Know Your Customer) is not required.
Starting today, people across India will be able to send money through WhatsApp 💸 This secure payments experience makes transferring money just as easy as sending a message. pic.twitter.com/bM1hMEB7sb

Like everything else, desi Twitter reacted to the news with jokes and memes. Some poked fun at competitors like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm while others cautioned against online fraud. Also, many joked about how they’d hound their friends who owed them money and relatives who send good morning texts.
