Urvashi Rautela was one of the many Indian celebrities who attended the Cannes Film Festival this year. And like always, she stirred a bit of controversy with her looks. First, there was the crocodile necklace that she chose to accessorize her first look with. Then she was accused of trying to copy Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s previous appearances by posing the same way as her and sporting a bright blue lip, reminding people of Aish’s lavender lip look from many years ago.
However, a jewellery expert named Arundhati De-Sheth spotted something fishy about Urvashi Rautela’s golden crocodile necklace. While the actor claimed that the necklace, which is designed by Cartier, was worn by Italian actor Monica Bellucci twice at Cannes in the past, Arundhati claimed that the necklace is merely a cheap copy of the original.
According to Hindustan Times, the Cartier crocodile necklace is one of its legendary high pieces. It was made to order for Mexican actress María Félix, features two crocodiles and was commissioned in 1975. While one crocodile is made out of 18-karat yellow gold and has more than 1,000 brilliant-cut fancy intense yellow diamonds, the other one is sculpted in 18-karat white gold and has 1,060 emeralds of 66.86 carats.
Monica Bellucci wore the Cartier necklace once in 2006 and then again at Cannes 2019, but it was a different version of the same necklace.
Arundhati De-Sheth took to Instagram Stories to call out Urvashi and alleged that she was wearing a “poor”, “shoddy”, “ugly” and a “sad” copy of the original piece.
“Going to Cannes in France. Home of @cartier- Then wearing a poor shoddy sad ugly copy of a historic piece. Allegedly representing our nation and pretending to be wearing the real thing. When it’s been hastily crafted in the back of beyond. Shameful @teamurvashirautelaofficial it seems you have not done any homework. We are a land of the most special treasures and jewels that she could have worn instead – this is blatant and so sad (sic),” she wrote.
