In The Age Of Drones & CCTV, UP Cops Hide On Trees To Track Looters On Yamuna Expressway

In recent times, many cases of theft have been reported from the Yamuna Expressway. Commuters travelling on the road have complained about being looted of their cash and jewellery. And in order to tackle this problem, Mathura Police came up with a unique solution.

In the age of drones and CCTV cameras, the police in Uttar Pradesh went old school. Cops climbed and hid on top of trees amid the leaves to track the looters on Yamuna Expressway. Pictures were shared by the Times of India. Have a look:

According to reports, an engineer working in Delhi, who was travelling via the expressway with his wife while a driver took hold of the steering wheel, was robbed by the looters on May 29. On June 2, a grocery dealer who was with 3 other people was robbed in a similar fashion. In another incident, the looters threw a huge rock at a vehicle which was being driven by a woman in a failed looting attempt.

“Police patrol has significantly increased over the last few days. Policemen can be spotted at every 2-km distance. Cops in civil dress, armed with guns and binoculars can be seen on trees and in fields adjoining the expressway. Checking of vehicles is more frequent. This action of Mathura police is unprecedented,” said the Superintendent of Police.

However, people online laughed out loud upon seeing the pictures. Firstly, many pointed out that this scheme by the Mathura Police shouldn’t have been blatantly announced on social media. The looters might soon find out and come up with other ways to loot the public. Next, many couldn’t fathom why such old-school methods were being used when modern surveillance technologies are rampantly used across the world.

Here’s a look at some of the responses:
