In the past, several Indian marriages have been called off on bizarre grounds. Like the UP bride who called off her wedding after the groom’s friends forcefully dragged her to the dance floor, or the bride who refused to get married after the groom performed ‘naagin dance’.
And now, adding to the list, a bride from Uttar Pradesh’s Mahoba called off her wedding right before exchanging garlands after the groom was unable to recite the 2-times table, reports Tribune India.
The Panwari Station House Officer, Vinod Kumar, revealed that the marriage between the two was arranged. However, the bride was suspicious about the groom’s educational qualifications.
Hence, the bride asked the groom to recite the 2-times table before the ‘varmala’ ceremony and when he couldn’t, she walked off the mandap stating that she couldn’t marry someone who didn’t know the basics of mathematics. Efforts of trying to convince her to get married were in vain.
“The groom’s family had kept us in the dark about his education. He may not have even gone to school. The groom’s family had cheated us. But my brave sister walked out without fearing social taboo,” said a cousin of the bride.
A police case wasn’t lodged after both parties struck a compromise, according to which both sides returned the jewellery and gifts to one another.
