With a new year comes a new day, and with a new day comes a new TV series.
If you are a complete TV series buff and ardently wait to update your watchlist, then it is that time of the year when you get to know what the coming year has in store for you, TV series-wise.
Of course watching Sherlock, Suits, Game of Thrones, Westworld, Prison Break, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Gotham, Lucifer and others’ new season is a must, here are the new series that are coming our way in 2017 in India!
1. One Day At A Time
Where: Netflix
Starring Justina Machado, Rita Moreno, Isabelle Gomez and Marcel Ruiz, this reimagined TV Classic is about a newly single mom who is taking her mom’s help to raise a teen daughter and a tween son. Sounds a bit like MOM, but hope it’s good that way.
2. The Defenders
Where: Netflix
Let’s put it this way – Marvel has The Avengers and The Defenders. So Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Iron Fist would come together to save the New York city. Sounds EPIC!
3. Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Where: Netflix
Of course, Jim Carrey is the ultimate Count Olaf. But, from the trailers we can see that Neil Patrick Harris is doing one fine job. The orphaned Baudelaire children are to face trials and undergo a series of unfortunate events until they uncover the secret behind their parents’ death.
4. Iron Fist
Where: Netflix
Marvel fans would love to see Danny Rand’s whole journey to becoming Iron Fist, right? But, we hear the makers will pick up from Rand’s return to Big Apple after being missing for several years. It stars Finn Jones as the ultimate master of martial arts blessed with mystical powers who fights the crime in the New York City. It also stars Jessica Henwick, David Wenham, Jessica Stroup and Tom Pelphrey.
5. Frontier
Where: Netflix
You will be seeing Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) as DC’s Aquaman, but you will also see him in this drama series set in the 18th Century. It is about power and wealth in the fur trade and along with Momoa, it also stars Landon Liboiron, Alun Armstrong and Jessica Matten.
6. Santa Clarita Diet
Where: Netflix
With Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant play a realtor husband and wife. But their lives are about to change dramatically, sending them down to the road of death and destruction. Is it for better or for worse?
7. Star Trek: Discovery
Where: Netflix
So it is a great piece of news for the Star Trek fans as the series returns with a new ship and new characters. And, their major aim being to explore new words so that they can bring hope to a new generation.
8. Anne
Where: Netflix
Based on the classic novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Laud Montgomery, the series is adapted by Emmy Award winning Moira Walley-Beckett. The season premiere of the eight episode series will be directed by Niki Caro.
9. Friends From College
Where: Netflix
Starring Keegan-Michael Key, Cobie Smulders, Annie Parisse, Nat Fuxon, Fred Savage and Jae Suh Park, this comedy series revolves around their lives when they hit their forties.
10. #Girlboss
Where: Netflix
Britt Robertson is the Girlboss, who runs her own fashion empire after being rebellious and broke. It is based on the bestseller by Sophia Amoruso. Sounds fun, right?
11. Riverdale
Where: Netflix
Modern day Archies, Veronica and Betty and their darker lives. They’re making sure that it would be far more interesting. But will it? Only time will tell!
12. 13 Reasons Why
Where: Netflix
A teenage girl’s classmate finds tapes that lead him to the reason why she committed suicide. He finds thirteen of them. It is based on Jay Asher’s young adult fiction Thirteen Reasons Why. Selena Gomez is producing it.
13. Gypsy
Where: Netflix
Naomi Watts is all set to a therapist, Jean Holloway, who gets deeply involved with the people in her patients’ lives. It also stars Billy Cudrup. ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ director Sam-Taylor Johnson would direct the first two episodes of the psychological thriller.
14. Dear White People
Where: Netflix
Based on the much acclaimed satiric indie film of 2014 about racial discrimination in Ivy League college, the series focuses on the post-racial America satire.
15. Mindhunter
Where: Netflix
Set in late 70s, this series is based on the novel ‘Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit’, and is executively produced by Charlize Theron and David Fincher. It stars Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany as two FBI agents who investigate serial killers.
16. The Young Pope
Where:Â HBO
It is an Italian- Spanish-French series that stars Jude Law and Diane Keaton. Lenny Belardo, becomes the youngest and first American Pope. It is written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino.
17. Taken
Where:Â HBO/Star World Premiere HD
You know Bryan Millis and his story after his family’s kidnapping. But how much of Bryan do you know? Reprising the role of young Millis is Clive Standen. We’ll finally get to know as to why was his family always a target.
18. The Deuce
Where:Â HBO/Star World Premiere HD
Starring James Franco, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Emily Meade, Margarita Levieva, Michael Rispoli, Natalie Paul, and Dominique Fishback, the show is set in the 70s. It maps the story of legalisation and rise of Porn industry in tthe neighbourhood of Washington Heights, New York.
19. Big Little Lies
Where: Star World Premiere HD
Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley are three mothers of kindergarten kids and they somehow find themselves amid a murder drama. Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée – who directed ‘Wild’ and ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ – this miniseries of seven episodes is based on Liane Moriarty’s best-selling book.
20. Barry
Where:Â HBO/Star World Premiere HD
This comedy series is about an ex-marine working as a low-rent hitman only to find him being accepted by eager hopefuls in Los Angeles’s theatre scene. It stars Bill Hader, Henry Winkler, Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, Anthony Carrigan, and Glenn Fleshler.
21. Imaginary Mary
Where:Â ABC/Star World/ Comedy Central
Alice aka Jenna Elfman thought she left her imaginary talking buddy back in her childhood. But Mary’s back, just when she started dating a single father with three kids. It is cute and looks fun.
22. The Exorcist
Where: Star World Premiere HD
The movie was one terrifying ride for the fans and now it is being made into a mini-series. The psychological TV thriller would show the terrifying demonic possession and how two very priests tackle it. While it has premiered in USA already, it will be coming to India next year.
23. Powerless
Where: NBC/Colors Infinity/ FX
Set inside the DC Universe, this comedy series is based on life inside an insurance company that settles damage claims caused by the battles between superheroes and supervillains. It stars Vanessa Hudgens, Danny Pudi, Alan Tudyk and Christina Kirk. Will we get to see other DC characters, too?
24. Pitch
Where:Â FX
It maps the emotional journey of Ginny Baker, who becomes the first woman to play Major League Baseball. It features Kylie Bunbury, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Ali Larter, Mark Consuelos, Dan Lauria, Mo McRae, Meagan Holder, and Tim Jo.
25. Emerald City
Where: NBC/Colors Infinity/ FX
Oz completely reimagined. Dorothy Gale is drawn into a mystical realm and she explores it with her K9 dog. Directed by Tarsem Singh, the series stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Adria Arjona, Ana Ularu, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Jordan Loughran, Gerran Howell and others.
