Tamil Nadu, has been the eye of controversies for days now. After the entire debate of Jallikattu and the aftermath of protest and arson across the state–which has still not subsided completely–TN today, somehow stands with a stranded, rather punctured political discourse.
And if news reports are anything to go by, it is only the beginning. The state that saw a mass movement by the youth against PETA to safeguard their local culture, will probably see another upheaval of discouraging the use of foreign products.
According to a report in The Hindu, trade associations in Tamil Nadu have asked their members and traders not to sell products manufactured by MNCs like Pepsi and Coca-Cola from March 1, 2017. Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaipu president A.M. Vikramaraja said,
“They cause more harm than good to the body. Only recently, one of the brands admitted to the fact that it was not suitable for children and that it contained certain harmful chemicals.”
While the directive is not a ban yet, the incentive is to promote the usage of Indian brands. The association also stressed that the entire month of February will be spent in educating traders and consumers about these foreign brands.
The chief of the association that houses around 6,000 member affiliates and 15.87 lakh members also pointed out to IB Times that these multinational companies are drawing TN’s underground water, rendering the farmers helpless.Â
While the directives will be in effect from March 1st, only time will tell and gauge its execution.
