On April 3, TikTok users in the country grieved because the Madras High Court ordered a ban of the Chinese video sharing application. It came into effect on April 16 and desi Twitter was flooded with memes – some celebrating the ban, while others showing disappointment. Consequently, the owners of the app filed a petition with the Supreme Court of India against the HC ruling.
According to Business Standard, after hearing the company ByteDance’s case, Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice S S Sundar of the Madurai Bench lifted the ban on one condition.
The company is to ensure that no pornographic or abusive content finds its way on the app. In the event it does, it will be treated as contempt of court.
The decision came after ByteDance told the court that apart from being deprived of new users, the ban was also causing a $500,000 per day loss in revenue for the company. It has assured the bench that there will be safeguards against uploading inappropriate content. In addition, manual plus AI-enable deletion of objectionable videos will be carried out.
Netizens couldn’t hide their joy at the ban being lifted and celebrated with hilarious memes made especially for the happy occasion.
