9 Reasons Why Swara Bhaskar Is The Heroine, Hero-Obsessed Bollywood Badly Needed

Let’s address the elephant in the room, Bollywood by virtue is sexist. Be it the inconsiderate wage gap between male and female actors or its trade-tested scripts that worship the hero, there is a long way before B-town can claim itself to be unbiased.

No, I’m not delusional and am aware of the few samaritans who have shouldered the responsibility of shunning gender typecasts but let’s not forget, Bollywood is still home to nepotists (no matter how much they defend)!

In light of the same, we really want to take a moment and thank the mysterious forces for introducing us to the very talented Swara Bhaskar.

Once a student of English literature, Swara, today, is as eloquent as a verse written by Shakespeare. From theatre in Delhi to silver screen in Mumbai, this feisty woman has left imprints and it’s time we acknowledge the same.

Here’s why Swara Bhaskar is the heroine Bollywood badly needed.

1. Outsider? Yes. Misfit? Never.

Swara was first visibly noticed in a supporting role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Guzaarish’. While the movie didn’t do very well, the stint opened several doors for Swara. And that was without any big surname backing her.

2. Swara till date has played several characters and no role takes the limelight away from another.

Versatility is Swara’s other name. Be it the best BFF one could have from, ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ to the strong, unsung mother of today in ‘Nil Battey Sannata’, Swara is the best character actor Bollywood has produced in a long time.

3. She is the unabashed lead, only a story of substance can afford!

I’m not talking money. But I’m definitely talking about the calling of a story like ‘Anaarkali Of Aarah’ that someone said and I quote, ‘Did everything that ‘Pink’ couldn’t!’. Swara, women empowerment is thankful today.

4. She is one of the few Bollywood ladies who didn’t shy away from supporting roles and went on to bag awards for the same!

Remember the bubbly Bindiya from ‘Raanjhanaa’? I’m sure you do. I mean who didn’t connect with her jealous yet loving portrayal of a simple girl from Banaras? Yes, Swara went ahead and won a Zee Cine Award for the same.

5. While we are at it, Swara is also an actress who manages to leave impressions even when she is not acting!

I’m talking about Swara’s brief stint as an anchor that brought her on Rajya Sabha TV for a show titled, ‘Sambidhan’. It was a ten-part television mini-series based on the making of the constitution of India and it showed Swara in a different light altogether.

6. She carves her own niche even in multi-starer, commercial projects.

‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ had a bunch of talented actors of the likes of Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor yet, Swara managed to register the role of Rajkumari Chandrika with her audiences with equal ease.

7. She is beyond the ideal mould of B-town actresses and how!

We are all aware of B-town’s fixation with fair skin and size zero, but the kind of mould Swara has brought about for herself and her contemporaries is refreshing!

8. The fact that she wrote an open letter to sexism, speaks a lot of her grit and character.

“I don’t know how it was in the age when the famed ‘Kamasutra’ was written, but there is a strange collective unconscious that we as Indian women inherit when it comes to matters of love, sex and desire.

Oh wait, the ‘Kamasutra’ was written by a MAN!”

Need I say more?

9. She gives back as good as she gets!

Remember when the (in)famous KRK tried to diss Swara for her attempt at something we all lauded? The same where he gave his prediction for ‘Anaarkali of Aarah’? Well, her reply made me the happiest that day!

So little time and already so much to credit for! You’re made for the skies, Swara. Don’t let anything clip your wings. And if you ever need, we got your back. 😉
