8 Social Media Sites That Every 90s-00s Kid Loved Using Before Facebook

Ooh! This millennial is back and this time brings you the nostalgia from the virtual world of the 90s and 2000s. In a world where we are glued to the blue interface and have made it our life’s book, we Facebookers have come REALLY long way when it comes to our social media interactions. The “tings” have changed so much since the late 90s and the early 2000s, and we are in a constant “update” mode. So, we thought it would be nice to re-visit the good ol’ days where things were simple yet fascinating. I am sure you know where I am getting at, here.

So, let the nostalgia wash over you. Here are the social media sites ( including tools like messengers) we were once hooked to, before the Facebook phenomenon happened.

1. Orkut

Yes, that’s the first name that crops up in our heads, doesn’t it? I remember it was a rage back in school and for 90s kids and millennials was a cool thing to be on. Garnering testimonials and writing messages to each other, publically and privately were quite hep things back then. But, at least, the stalking was not so private on Orkut (which BTW, started the same year as Facebook in 2004).

2. MSN

ASL, anyone? If you’re wondering what is that? Google it! Oh, that was the shiz back then. Multiple chatrooms, multiple chats, simultaneous interactions and what not. MSN was the first thing we logged onto when we switched on the PC, all thanks to the pop-up window (when enabled) would ask you to log in. Group contacts and voice interactions with our friends were considered revolutionary, back then.

3. AOL

Remember that? It was actually one of the earliest and most used interaction tools. Many still choose to believe that it brought in vogue the whole instant messaging phenomenon. But, from social media it became a media house, and it one of the players in the other world.

4. Myspace

It was the space to be and people did love it there. It was the Facebook of that time and everyone wanted to be on it. We loved the polls, the bulletins, the swanky interest-related groups and of course, the ‘Top Friends’ feature signified the online clique of yours.

5. Yahoo! Messenger

This one has been easy to use and the most-used at the same time. And, remember the Emoticon-talks, voice calls, chatting incessantly on it? Uff! How much is Y! Messenger is missed we can’t articulate well in words!

6. Friendster.

It was Tinder and Facebook rolled into one, in those days. Not only did people interact online socially, but it was also a reason behind many offline love stories. Much so, that it was called the grandfather of social media. 😛 Now, it is a social gaming platform.

7. hi5

The counts of hi5 and the messages that followed are missed. And, it was like a world within a world and steadily grew upon us. I don’t know, how many of you even remember it.

8. Tagged

Not the photo-tagging tag on pictures, guys. We are talking about the site which allowed users to add friends, send ‘winks’ and ‘luv’ and gifts. Yeap! That one. Rings a bell?

Special mention to the old G Talk, which is now Google Hangouts.

Offline and still talking 😛 A place where we could go invisible.

And, then Facebook happened! Technically, FB happened in 2004, but it majorly happened in 2009 and since then, it’s popularity is ever-increasing and now we all are hooked real bad to it. Oh, and then there’s even Twitter! 😉

Which ones out of these are you miss badly? And, let us know if we missed out on any.
