“There’s No Rape In Tribal Culture,” Politician Blames Item Numbers & Porn For Gangrape Of Mother In Dumka

On December 8, a 35-year-old woman from Jharkhand’s Dumka was allegedly gang-raped by 17 drunk men while she was returning from the market at around 8 pm with her husband. The victim, who has 5 kids, has been sent for medical examination and the cops have lodged an FIR at Muffasil Police Station, reports India Today.

Following the heinous crime, politician Shivanand Tiwari said, “No one could’ve ever imagined that a girl/woman would ever be raped in a tribal area. There was no rape in the tribal culture but the consumerist culture that began to bring in modernism, presented women as articles for consumption.”

Deccan Herald quoted him adding, “Item dance in films, ads, pornographic content on phones prepare mindset of rape. Just making stringent laws won’t end it. As long as the situation that incites people for rape persists you won’t be able to stop it.”

The Indian Express quoted Santhal Paragna, DIG Sudarshan Mandal saying, “As per the statement of the women she was gang-raped. Her husband was made hostage when the incident happened. We have arrested one person and the hunt is on to arrest the remaining accused.”

We hope that those accused of the brutal crime are nabbed by the cops at the earliest.
