The Story Of Sadiq Khan – How A Pakistani Bus Driver’s Son Became The Mayor Of London

Sadiq Khan made history after being elected as the first Muslim Mayor of London. A member of the Labour Party, Khan has gone through a rough and rigorous childhood, and has persevered hard to reach the position he is at now.

We will go through some of the highlights which have spanned his illustrious life.

Sadiq Khan was born to Pakistani parents, a bus driver and a seamstress, who immigrated from Pakistan to England.

Khan’s grandparents were the first immigrants to England during the Indo-Pak partition. Khan’s parents also immigrated later, shortly before his birth. Khan’s father, the late Amanullah Khan was a bus driver for over 25 years, and his mother, Sehrun, was a seamstress (dressmaker).

 

Seeing his parents working, Khan also got the vigour to work, as a paper boy and a construction site labourer.

“I was surrounded by my mum and dad working all the time, so as soon as I could get a job, I got a job. I got a paper round, a Saturday job – some summers I laboured on a building site.”

Khan said that his family still sends money regularly to their relatives in Pakistan, because they have been living a blessed life in England.

 

Khan originally wanted to become a dentist, but he was convinced into pursuing Law by a teacher.

In his formative years, Khan attended Fircroft Primary School and Ernest Bevin College, and pursued Science and Math, for he wanted to pursue Dentistry. But seeing his argumentative nature, a teacher asked him to think about pursuing Law. Inspired by his teacher and the TV show LA Law, Khan graduated from the University of North London.

 

Khan held several positions in Parliament and was eventually elected as Mayor of London in May of 2016.

Khan had previously held positions of Minister of State for Communities as well as Minister of State for Transport under Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and was only the second Muslim to serve for The Queen’s Government.

Sadiq Khan is yet another example of how grit, determination, and a will to serve can lead any man to success.
