Ratna Pathak Shah Calls Most Hindi Films That Were Made Earlier ‘Garbage’ & ‘Mediocre’

We cannot ignore the fact that in our country, the reel world influences the real world. Whether it be Aisha in Wake Up Sid or Kabir in Kabir Singh, characters and films have the power to influence people’s minds. This is probably why filmmakers have the responsibility of making films of quality. In today’s age, art for art’s sake stands irrelevant, or some might argue.

Stellar actor Ratna Pathak Shah recently shed light on the kind of films that were made before. She calls most of them “laughable”, “garbage” and is glad that the film industry is churning out films of substance.

The Indian Express quoted her saying:

“We were genuinely laughable, today we are not. Today, we take ourselves seriously and hopefully, the world will too. We haven’t got there yet, we are still struggling with many things, but we are on the path. Down the line, the world will have to take notice of us.”

The ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ actor further added how filmmakers used to “trivialize” everything and made “mediocre” films. But today they have the courage to tell important and powerful stories that will eventually put Hindi films under the spotlight for the world to see.

“We have trivialised everything. Until recently, our films were about the most trivial things, garbage that we could see. Of course not all, but out of the large number of films we produced, 800 or something, maybe only 8 were something that would stand the test of time.”

Do you agree that today’s films are much better than what was produced a couple of years earlier? Tell us!
