Ragpicker’s Son Cracks AIIMS Entrance Test In His First Attempt, Garners Praise From All

India has a population of around 1.3 billion people. That gigantic number usually equates to lack of resources, high level of competition when it comes to education and jobs, and just a whirlpool of other complications. And while a large section of our country are resorting to corruption, there are some underdogs who’re putting in the effort to do something good. Such is the story of Asharam Choudhary.

According to The Hindu, 20-year-old Asharam Choudhary, a ragpicker’s son from Madhya Pradesh, cleared the AIIMS entrance test. He talked about his journey saying,

“There are some gaps in the roof from where sun rays and rain drops easily seeps into our house. The adversities have never deterred me from continuing my studies. This was my first attempt [in AIIMS entrance test] and my teachers at Navodaya Vidyalaya, especially Amit sir [his Biology teacher], guided me in clearing the exam.”

Asharam lives with his parents, Ranjit and Mamta Choudhary, in Vijayganj Mandi where Ranjit works as a rag-picker. The house that he speaks of is a shack made of hay collected from agricultural fields and the roof is covered with clay tiles and plastic sheets. But none of that stopped him from not only clearing AIIMS (707 All-India rank and 141 Rank in OBC category), but also the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (2763 All-India rank and 803 rank in OBC category).

Medical-based exams aren’t like engineering exams. They’re extremely tough to crack and just a high-level I.Q isn’t enough. One needs a special form of motivation and Asharam had that from an early age.

“I decided to become a doctor by chance. When I was studying in Class V, my father took me to a ‘jhola chaap‘ (quack) doctor. I saw him prescribing a few medicines and earning ₹50 in few minutes. The incident left a deep impression on me. I compared his work with the labour of my father, who collected discarded plastic bottles, iron pieces, especially near the railway crossings, and earned less than ₹50 in an entire day.”

AIIMS houses some of the best doctors in the country. So, once Asharam completes his training there, his parents definitely won’t need to go to any jhola chaap doctor anymore.

Asharam certainly had the will-power and the support of his parents to fight his way to the top. But that raw power always needs some guidance and Asharam attributes that to the Dakshana Foundation.

But the main reason behind my success is the guidance and training I received at the Dakshana Foundation, Pune [a coaching centre which trains students from impoverished families from rural India for engineering and medical entrance tests]. Because of my first rank in the entrance examination of Dakshana Foundation, and my poor financial background, they extended support to me.”

Dakshana Foundation has certainly done an A+ job in training Asharam and can now have him as a proud alumni of the institution.

Asharam’s success story has resonated with all and they’ve congratulated him for clearing such a difficult exam.

1. Cannot agree more.

2. Asharam is an inspiration for many now.

3. Exactly!

Congratulations to Ahsaram for clearing this exam and making his parents prouder than ever. We hope that he’ll become one of the best doctors in India and make our country’s medical scenario better.
