This 21-Year-Old Girl With 80% Vision Loss Has Defied All Odds To Grab A Seat At IIM-A

“Take a limitation and turn it into an opportunity. Take an opportunity and turn it into an adventure by dreaming BIG!”

This quote by author Jo Franz aptly describes the life of Prachi Sukhwani, who fought every obstacle that challenged her and came out victorious.

Prachi, a 21-year-old Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) student from Vadodara suffers from ‘Macular dystrophy’ (or retinal degradation) since she was in class 3. Due to the problem, she has lost over 80% of her vision.

However, Prachi didn’t let her disability become a barrier on her way to success.

After she cracked the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2016 with 98.55 percentile, Prachi has now been selected for admission in the prestigious ‘Indian Institute of Management (IIM)- Ahmedabad’.

Speaking of her ambitions, Prachi said that she wants to work for the betterment of people who suffer from blindness.

“My short-term goal is to join a company, preferably a multinational. Once I get some experience, I will have my own start-up. But my long-term goal is to open an NGO for the blind.”

Prachi’s father, Suresh Sukhwani, says that she was regularly taken to Chennai for 15 years where she was advised by the doctors to wear special reading glasses.

“But she is so engrossed in studies that she finds even those glasses to be an obstacle for her. She got calls from all the top three IIMs, IIM-Ahmedabad, IIM-Bangalore and IIM-Kolkata, and appeared for the interviews,”

Applauding Prachi for her achievement, Sharad Bansal, dean of Faculty of Commerce at Prachi’s alma mater (Maharaja Sayajirao University) said,

“Prachi deserves special applause for her success despite all odds. Her success is an inspiration for everybody.”

If she can do it, what’s your excuse?
