I still remember waking up on the 17th of December, 2012, to a news that jolted me to the core. To a happening that invoked pain, grief, disgust but mostly fear of living in a society, being a girl! A day that made me learn about Nirbhaya, her gang rape, her torture, her turmoil but our SHAME!
I don’t want to repeat the specifics, but I’m sure none of us has forgotten. Thankfully, the system hasn’t either. In a benchmark verdict, the Supreme court has upheld the death penalty of the 4 convicts-Â Akshay, Pawan, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh – who challenged the Delhi High Court’s March 2014 confirmation of the death sentence. Â
Needless to say, there is a sense of calm, a shared numbness amongst Twitterati who didn’t let their emotions shroud their sense of judgement.Â
1. The question remains…
Justice for #Nirbhaya.
Nothing has changed, since that horrific and murderous night, though. Are women ANY safer? If not, shame on us all.

2. Undoubtedly!Â
I welcome #SupremeCourt verdict to uphold death sentence to 4 convicts in #Nirbhaya case. This will serve as warning to similar offenders.

3. Our prayers for JYOTI.Â
Now that the verdict is in can we stop saying #Nirbhaya & say her name #Jyoti. Her mother has called for it. Stigma is of rapists, not women

4. The day is here!
Times Now reporter: Entire court room broke into applause as judge announced the verdict, not something I've seen covering courts #Nirbhaya

5. Only one!
Rape has only one Punishment – Death. If you don't bring fear in them of not doing it, they will bring fear in you by doing it.#Nirbhaya

7. Heinous is an understatement.Â
In principle I am against death penalty, but this was such a heinous crime that strictest punishment was needed: Brinda Karat,CPIM #Nirbhaya pic.twitter.com/YQb62fjjO9
