If You Want To Talk About The Nirbhaya Rapists, Talk. Don’t Generalize India.

In the past three years, I have witnessed an alarming increase in the news talking about how all Indian men are randy bastards out there to destroy the next girl’s virtue their eyes fall upon.

India has a population of 1.27 billion out of which 656.6 million are men. Are all these 656.6 million men out there to rape us?

With respect to our population rate, our rape rate is 2.0 per 100,000 people over 2008-2012 periods.

Let us look at the rest of the world shall we?

1.2 per 100,000 in Japan,
3.6 per 100,000 in Morocco,
4.6 rapes per 100,000 in Bahrain,
12.3 per 100,000 in Mexico,
24.1 per 100,000 in United Kingdom,
28.6 per 100,000 in United States,
66.5 per 100,000 in Sweden,
and world’s highest rate of 114.9 rapes per 100,000 in South Africa.

I’m not saying we should stay mum about the unfortunate events in India but if you are going to talk about Nirbhaya rapist, Mukesh Sharma, talk about the millions of men and women gathered in front of India Gate demanding justice. Do not feel ashamed to call yourselves Indians because that way you are letting the minority sex offenders win, be proud of your nation and tell that world about the greatness of our country and its strong culture and how a few misguided fools have wrongly interpreted it. Do not generalize our country as a rapist nation because that way you are shutting doors for real men and women to lose their footing to prove themselves globally like in the case of our brother in the Germany.

As a woman, I am enthralled that the nation is finally talking about the upliftment of woman but as an Indian I’m pissed off that we have come to become that rape nation. I do not like how an eligible candidate was denied admission in Germany over this issue nor am I pleased that the rest of the world mocks every article about an Indian because to them we are still snake charmers who believe women have no rights.

As of 2013, due to the widespread awareness that was brought about after the Nirbhaya case, about 1330 cases were reported in New Delhi alone against a number 706 in entire India in 2012. The increased awareness about rape has bought forward several judicial reforms since 2013 and introduction of fast track courts for Rapes.

If we believe everything the mainstream tells us then America is horrible country for African Americans because their police are racist and Australia is unfit to live in due to the high rates of domestic violence.

Let me stress the point that India is country of millions and is working steadily towards reformation and development of women rights. It is my duty as an Indian to reform the views of bigoted idiots who go by anything said to them by the biased media.
